Local Events Calendar for San Antonio Military Housing: For the Kids

If you live (or are going to live) in off-base San Antonio military housing near Randolph AFB, Lackland AFB or Fort Sam Houston, you’ll never have to worry about keeping the kids entertained. The San Antonio area is chock full of great activities, organizations and events designed just for the little ones. Whether your children are the artistic type, love sports or are really into science, there’s plenty of great stuff to keep them excited, happy and occupied this summer.

Here are just a few of the kid-friendly events going on this summer near Randolph AFB housing, Lackland housing and Fort Sam Houston apartments:

Movie by Moonlight

The city of San Antonio is hosting a family fun event called Movies by Moonlight. Every Tuesday night this summer, local parents and kids can head to Hemisfair Park and catch an animated flick beneath the stars. So far, the series has shown “Despicable Me,” “Brave,” “The Lion King,” “Tintin” and more. 

When: Every Tuesday beginning at 7:30

Where: Hemisfair Park, 200 S. Alamo St.

Cost: Free

Pint-Size Science

Does your child just love learning? Then check out the Pint-Sized Science program at the San Antonio Children’s Museum. Every Tuesday and Wednesday, kids between ages 4 and 6 can head up to SACM and learn about basic science concepts, animals, weather and lots more interesting stuff. 

When: Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and Wednesdays at 2 p.m.

Where: San Antonio Children’s Museum, 305 E. Houston St.

Cost: Free with museum admission

Miss Anastasia’s Storytime

If your kid is the creative type, let them stretch their imagination with Miss Anastasia’s Storytime at The Twig bookstore. Every Friday, children can hear a unique story and participate in a fun, hands-on craft with other local kids. 

When: Every Friday at 10:30 a.m.

Where: The Twig, 306 Pearl Parkway, Suite 106

Cost: Free

Crafts for Kids

The Lakeshore Learning Store offers a free creative and fun crafting opportunity every Saturday for kids and families in the area. Each week features a different project, and kids ages 3 and older are welcome to participate.

When: Every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Where: Lakeshore Learning Store, 327 N.W. Loop 410

Cost: Free

Growing Up Wild

Let your kids enjoy the great outdoors with the Growing Up Wild program on July 19. Located at Phil Hardberger Park, kids ages 3 to 7 can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, learn about local wildlife and participate in some fun, hands-on crafts.

When: July 19 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Where: Phil Hardberger Park East, 13203 Blanco Road, Salado Creek Outdoor Classroom

Cost: Suggested $3 donation

Nature Walk

Get a taste of the local scenery with the Tree Muses nature walk Saturday, Aug. 3 at Crowndridge Canyon. Families from all over San Antonio will come together for a hike through the canyon, learning about native plants, leaves and other vegetation. 

When: Aug. 3 at 9 a.m.

Where: Crowndridge Canyon, 7222 Luskey Blvd.

Cost: $2 per person, $6 per family

Fishing Fun

Teach your child all about the wonderful sport of fishing in this fun clinic, taking place Aug. 10 at 9 a.m. During the event, which is hosted by the San Antonio River Authority, kids will learn to tie knots, discover different casting techniques and even compete for prizes. The program is limited to only 25 participants, so reservations are recommended.

When: Aug. 10 at 9 a.m.

Where: Medina River Natural Area, 15890 Hwy. 16 South

Cost: $3 per person, $5 per family

Take a Dip

Cool down from the hot weather with a dip in one of San Antonio’s four regional pools. Operated by the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department, all pools are free to use for San Antonio residents. Locations include: Heritage, 1423 Elison Dr.; Lady Bird Johnson, 10700 Nacogdoches; South Side Lions, 3100 Hiawatha; and Woodland, 1100 Cincinnati.
