24th Air Force (24 AF)
The operational war fighting organization
Mission of the 24 AF
“The mission of the 24th Air Force is to provide combatant commanders with trained and ready cyber forces to plan and conduct cyberspace operations, and to extend, maintain and defend the Air Force portion of the global information grid.”
The 24 AF has the unique responsibility of operating and defending the AF’s networks to make sure the United States always maintains an information advantage in military affairs. The 24 AF provides trained forces that are equipped with the knowledge to conduct cyber operations.
History of the 24 AF
This newly created Air Force made its debut in 2009 and made AF history by becoming the first numbered Air Force (NAF) created solely for cyberspace operations. The AF realized the necessity to create a force that would take on the responsibility of cyber warfare missions. The history of the 24th AF may be short thus far, but its mission is certainly not limited, by any means.
The 24th Air Force
Three wings spread out between Texas and Georgia make up the 24 AF and work together to ensure network advantage in cyber operations.
- 67th Network Warfare Wing at Lackland AFB, Texas
- 688th Information Operations Wing at Lackland AFB, Texas

The 24 AF has over 5,400 people involved in 24-hour cyberspace operations, including 3,339 military members, 1,364 contractors, and 2,975 civilian personnel. The new unit facilitates cyberspace capabilities that are crucial to combatant commanders for joint operations and global success.
