Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency (AF ISR)

Freedom Through Vigilance

Mission of the ISR

The mission of the AF ISR is to “organize, train, equip and present assigned forces and capabilities to conduct intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance for combatant commanders and the nation.”

History of the AF ISR Agency

In 1948, the AF established the Air Force Security Group. It went through many name changes over the years before finally becoming the Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Agency in 2007. The name has changed from 1948 but the mission remains the same. It is rapidly evolving to meet all threats to this nation.

The Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency

Headquartered at Lackland AFB, Texas, the AF ISR has about 17,00 people that serve at 65 locations worldwide. Recently a team completed improvements to a system in Afghanistan. Within a day of completing the improvements required for the system to function, they were able to identify imminent suicide attacks against coalition bases. They worked with the Army to identify and locate the suicide bombers. An air strike was launched, the suicide bombers were destroyed, and the attack on the coalition bases was preempted.

Vigilance is a vital role the Agency plays in protecting our nation as well as our allies. The AF ISR Agency provides units with video of real time surveillance to help missions evolve moment by moment. They take the guessing game out of the mix and through advancements in technology, the Agency continues to make a direct impact on missions. The AF ISR Agency's contribution to the joint-fight is vital for its success.
