San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC)

Home to the future of military medicine

Mission of SAMMC

Quality healthcare is essential to the success of the US Military; SAMMC, or the San Antonio Military Medical Center, is committed to promoting health efficiently and providing the full spectrum of military healthcare to patients while preparing the next generation of healthcare leaders. SAMMC emphasizes the role of availability, accessibility, and accountability in gaining patient trust.

History of SAMMC

In 2011, SAMMC moved into the building formerly known as the Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), and has integrated with the former Wilford Hall Medical Center, now the Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center (WHASC), to create an integrated healthcare system. SAMMC has taken over all inpatient responsibilities, becoming the DoD’s largest inpatient care facility, and the new WHASC is the largest outpatient surgical medical center. This integration of SAMMC and WHASC allows the units to share staff and best practices to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of military healthcare.

San Antonio Military Medical Center

SAMMC recently completed a 760,000 sq. ft. addition to the hospital at Fort Sam Houston, Texas; the entire facility now spans over 2 million sq. ft. The Center has 425 inpatient beds; 32 operating rooms; subspecialty clinics; adult, neonatal and pediatric intensive care units; and the DoD’s only Bone Marrow Transplant Unit and Level 1 Trauma Center. SAMMC is one of only 15 hospitals in the entire nation to have both American Burn Association accreditation and Level 1 Trauma certification.

The San Antonio Military Medical Center supports 89 education programs, and maintains the Cardio-Vascular, Maternal-Child, Battlefield Health, and Trauma Centers of Excellence. By working hand in hand with WHASC, SAMMC is improving the quality of healthcare provided to service members and their families.
