U.S. Army Medical Information Technology Center (USAMITC)

Mission of the USAMITC

The U.S. Army Medical Information Technology Center, or USAMITC, is responsible for developing and maintaining a worldwide information management and information technology (IM/IT) system for the DoD, Army Medical Command, and other government entities. From design to implementation to 24/7 support, USAMITC manages systems to enhance healthcare in furtherance of Army Medicine’s medical mission. The mission of the USAMITC is to utilize rapidly evolving technology to modernize and improve Army Medicine as we move towards the future of healthcare, in which IM/IT is tied inextricably with successful patient care.

History of the USAMITC

The Center currently falls under the U.S. Army Medical Command. Due to its technological nature, USAMITC is a new center when compared to the rest of the Army medical career fields. The USAMITC opened its Enterprise Service Desk (ESD) support center in a new building in Fort Sam Houston, Texas in March 2010. The help system, staffed by 124 IT technicians, is available 24/7/365 to assist medical personnel all over the world to enhance healthcare for military service members and their families.

The U.S. Army Medical Information Technology Center

Headquartered at Fort Sam Houston, TX, the Center maintains a detailed surgery scheduling technology system that ensures efficiency in the operating room. Along with maintaining the surgery schedules, USAMITC also manages all of the Army Medical Department files. The Center plays an essential role in the operations of the Army Surgeon General. The Center also provides business technology solutions to handle the enterprise IT side of healthcare: automating repetitive business processes, developing logistics and reporting systems, and providing clinical support. Research using advanced technology enables the Center to maintain a competitive medical edge while supporting the mission of meeting medical needs.

Out of the 70,000 users of the U.S. Army Medical Command, over 50,000 receive support through the Enterprise Service Desk or other systems created by the USAMITC. The Center’s organizational matrix is structured so as to allow rapid assembly of expert teams of technicians for better customer support.
